Improving food security of the population, with special attention to children and women, in 12 villages of Kayes region, Mali.

After the grant recently disbursed, CONEMUND and its local partner ADG have started a new project, titled ”Improving food security of the population, with special attention to children and women, in 12 villages of Kayes region, Mali” sponsored by the Andalusian Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AACID).The project is aimed at improving food and nutrition security, with special focus on children and women of reproductive age, in 4 rural communities of the circles of Diema, Nioro and Bafoulabé, in Kayes region, with the following expected results:

Improved agricultural and livestock production, via the training of producers and the promotion of horticultural activities and the manufacturing of dairy products.Trainings will be conducted on soil conservation and recovery practices, the use of organic fertilizers and basic crop protection techniques.

Furthermore, 1950 kg of improved seeds will be delivered in order to increase production yields.

The project will also provide technical trainings in food storage, cereal banks and community management to the farmers’ organizations of the 4 rural communes, while promoting off-season horticultural activities.Finally, warehouses for proper fodder conservation will be built in order to feed the cattle, and training in traditional cheese production will be provided.

Improved nutrition and health of the population, through promoting breastfeeding, disseminating recipes based on local products, controlling the level of infant malnutrition and monitoring vaccination protocol.

Increased resilience of the most vulnerable population via environmental conservation.Irrigation ponds will be excavated and native plant species of economic interest will be planted in order to reduce deforestation and improve family nutrition.Firebreaks will also be made to protect pastures, crops and vegetation.

CONEMUND has a large experience in food security projects in rural West Africa.CONEMUND’s most important lines of intervention reside in promoting agriculture, safe water access, raw materials valorization and training for vulnerable groups. The working techniques and methods of our NGO have been corroborated by many projects implemented over the years. The experience CONEMUND has developped in Mali is mainly focused on food security, with a special focus on children and women.
